Our Roadschool Setup: A Space to Learn While Traveling

Traveling full-time as a family of six is an incredible experience, but it also comes with unique challenges—especially when it comes to creating a functional learning space. With limited room in our RV, we had to be intentional about designing a roadschool setup that supports our children’s education while keeping things organized and stress-free.

This past summer, we revamped our learning area to make it more kid-friendly, organized, and efficient. Our focus was on designated individual spaces, organized storage, and easy setup to ensure smoother mornings. Through some strategic upgrades, we’ve made learning on the road significantly easier and less chaotic.

While our current setup works well, it’s still a work in progress, and we’re constantly refining our daily routines and organization. As a larger family, staying organized in a small space is an ongoing challenge, but we’ve learned to adapt along the way. My hope in sharing this is to inspire those just beginning their travel journey. When we first started, we were hesitant to make any changes to our RV, but over time, we’ve realized how essential it is to tailor the space to fit our needs.

How We Designed Our Roadschool Setup

To create an effective learning environment, we made a few key changes that have transformed our daily routine:

1. Replacing RV Furniture for a Functional Workspace

The biggest upgrade to our school space was installing pull-out desks in our slide-out living area. Since the space is narrow, these desks allow for:

  • Monitors and laptops to stay in place without needing to be packed away constantly.
  • A pull-out desktop that provides additional workspace as needed.
  • Individual storage drawers for books and personal supplies.

Each desk seats two students, making it a perfect fit for our family. Plus, when school time is over, the space transitions seamlessly for gaming, meals, or other activities. On travel days, we simply place the monitors and laptops on the beds for safe transport.

We purchased these desks from Target, however they are no longer carrying this specific model.  You could try a similar design such as this nesting desk from Amazon.

2. Easy-Access Storage Bins

Each of our kids has a designated white storage bin on their desk, keeping essential items within reach. These bins help prevent misplaced supplies and morning chaos. We use them to store:

✔ Personal Electronics
✔ Chargers
✔ Dry-erase markers
✔ Other small school supplies

Before using these bins, finding a charger or a dry-erase marker could take way too long! Now, everything has a home, making organization effortless (most of the time-ha!).

🚨 Side Note: Keeping Our Air Fresh on the Road

One unexpected but essential addition to our RV learning space has been our Levoit 200S Air Purifier. With six people (and plenty of road dust) in a small space, air quality can make a huge difference in how we feel day to day. This purifier has been a game-changer—it’s quiet, compact, and keeps the air fresh while removing allergens and odors. If you’re traveling full-time or just need cleaner air in a small space, we highly recommend it!

3. Upper Cabinet Storage for Extra Supplies

We repurposed the upper cabinets in our RV to store extra educational materials and personal items. Each child has their own section where they can keep:

  • Notebooks, reading books, and textbooks
  • Additional school supplies
  • A small bin for gaming accessories

This has been a game-changer in keeping things tidy while allowing them to have access to their personal items.

4. Individual Toy Storage for Personal Space

To help our kids maintain a sense of personal space, we assigned each of them their own toy storage ottoman. These storage bins from Walmart:

✔ Hold a surprising amount of toys
✔ Help avoid arguments over whose toys belong to whom
✔ Allow the kids to bring most of their favorite toys along for the journey

Having their own space for toys makes the RV feel more like home, no matter where we are.

Creating a Positive Learning Environment on the Road

While travel is a huge part of our family’s lifestyle, education remains a top priority. Our RV setup is just one way we ensure a productive and comfortable learning space for our children.

We believe that travel itself is an incredible educational experience—exploring new places, learning about history firsthand, and discovering different cultures. By fostering an organized and engaging learning space, we make sure our kids can focus on both their roadschool curriculum and the world around them.
